Igumale is the headquarters of Ado local government area and was the first place in Idoma land that Methodist missionaries settled down. In 1924, that the missionaries founded the first school in Idoma land, Methodist Central Primary School Igumale, which counts amongst its old pupils, HRH, Agabaidu Edwin Ogbu, the Och'Idoma III and first Idoma graduate, Justice James Ogebe, OFR, CON, JSC (rtd), the first Supreme Court Judge from Idoma Land and Prof Ochapa Onazi, the first idoma to become the VC of a Nigerian University
Igumale which shares a boundary with Eha-Amafu in Enugu State, has a railway station on the Port-Harcourt to Kafanchan rail route. Igumale consists of the following clans and sub-clans: Ebia (Ayi-Ajibo, Ayi-Agbo, Ayi-Agbo Idogwu, Iga, Osukpo, Ehitso, Orukwu and Oturukpo), Olokwu (Olokwu and Igede) and Ogbe (Ogbe). The district head of Igumale is called the Otsapa Igwumale.
